Weekly Peek 12/12-12/23
Over the last two weeks, we have applied our science understandings of organisms and our literacy understandings of "How To" books, and created our own "How to Build a Terrarium" books. Below are photos of students engaging in the writing process- from creating outlines and drafts, to adding illustrations and publishing their books.
Here are two excellent examples of students final products. You can see they both successfully applied both science and literacy concepts in a final product that gave them the different supports they needed.
Students shared their books with each other, and in Ms. Valedon's class, were also invited to share their writing in English during their author's party in their Spanish speaking classroom. Students were proud to show their bilingualism!

During the last two weeks, we have observed two pond organisms- guppies and snails, and two woodland organisms- pill bugs and millipedes! We also practiced comparing these organisms. First graders are getting really good and talking and listening to each other about science!
Weekly Peek 10/24-10/28
We began a new unit this week.... on Organisms, or living things! Students are getting a lot of practice being scientists by interacting with each other while observing, describing, and comparing living things.

Our scientists have now become authors as they write their first book, "All About Rocks". Students apply their knowledge of text features by including a title page, illustrations, and table of contents. We have also made some wonderful connections between science and their Spanish literacy block!
